Club Creative is looking for an artist (or artists) to produce a minimum of three murals to be installed in a primary school canteen in Yarm, Teesside, England (NOT YARM PRIMARY SCHOOL). The murals will be designed with pupils in a series of workshops to take place in the summer term.
The school have been successful in obtaining Canteen Rescue funding from the School Food Trust and the object is to transform the canteen’s appearance and encourage pupls to take up school meals and in particular healthy school meal options. The pupils have already explored some design themes during the application process and these themes should be incorporated by the artist into the finished murals.
The key deliverable are: Fully redecorate all walls within the dining space with an artistic impression of Yarm High Street, to incorporate healthy food and school messages. Specific messages and themes will be discussed once an initial proposal has been accepted.
The murals should be both 2D and 3D and be sturdy enough to last many years in the busy canteen environment. The murals should be created on wall mountable plywood or other suitable material to enable the school to take them down safely for decorating purposes.
The budget for the project including a minimum of 6 workshop days, materials, design preparation, travel and installation is £3500.
Please use the contact form to express your interest. Once you receive a reply please email a proposal including relevant experience and examples of previous work in no more than 500 words, an up to date CV, and most up to date CRB number, issue date and awarding body by Friday 22 April for the attention of Neil Walker, Club Creative.
Additional info:
All mural heights are roughly 2 meters.
Approximate widths as follows:
Mural 1 : 5 meters width
Mural 2 : Corner mural 1.5 meters + adjoining wall 3.5 meters
Mural 3 : Corner mural 1 metre + adjoining wall 1 metre.
UPDATE 18/4/11
There has been an overwhelming response to this opportunity resulting in a slight delay in responding to enquiries. We will be making a shortlist after the submission deadline from which the school will select the successful artist. The successful artist will be notified by 11/5/11.
UPDATE 13/5/11
The school have been busy with SATS so the successful artist will be chosen w/c 16/5/11. Thanks for your patience.

I have just left a reply on the Club Creative main site. To repeat some of what I said:- I would be interested to learn more about the project before applying. What is the time scale for the mural, 6 weeks or 12 weeks? What size or area is the mural to cover? How many removable boards are you talking about? Is the canteen space used for anything else, like a sports hall? I would really like a little more information before applying, though I am sure you will no doubt have plenty of mural artists registering their interest without additional information. My telephone number is

Hello,
I’m contacting you to let you know that I am interested in the school mural project.
I was wanting to ask about the 500 word statement. Would you like applicants to use this as an opportunity to describe the previous projects as well as a short proposal?
best wishes
Paul
I am an international award winning children’s author & illustrator who trained as a fine artist and work under the pseudonym of Anna Nilsen. I have published over 100 inter-active children’s books, 35 jigsaws and games, many of which I have also illustrated.
I have illustrated several vacant shop windows producing images of 6m x 2m. I have now developed a whacky robotic world. I believe they act as a child friendly vehicle for conveying messages.
If you have more details regarding the technicalities of the installation I would be grateful as this effects the costing. Eg Will the school supply the manpower and equipment to do this?
Kind regards,
Andrea Bassil D.A.Edin
This sounds like an exciting project and I will be applying for the commission. I have just got back from two weeks holiday so my apllication will be a bit last minute.
Can you please give me email details for sending my application? Thanks
Hi Neil
I am very interested in your advertisement for a mural advertisement and should like to apply. I work on a commission basis doing both private and public murals, as well as working part-time in theraputic arts with children, adults with learning difficulties and in Hospitals. I also have a lot of classroom experience in Primary schools.
A couple of questions…
Which specific year groups are going to be involved? Or does the client want the whole school to be invoved in the design process?
Are the three murals adjoining, or are they separate? This would affect whether or not to have the design flowing from one to the other, or to have them as individual mrals in their own right.
Many thanks and look forward to hearing from you
